On September 19, the world marked an annual global social action programme aimed at combating the global solid waste problem, including that of marine debris.

In Port Elizabeth, EnviroServ's Fiona West, Patrick Gombos and Pieter Slabber joined a clean-up organised by the Zwartkops Conservancy which seeks to conserve the Swartkops Estuary. "As an environmental ambassador, I was excited to take be part of the world's largest volunteer effort for our ocean and waterways on behalf of EnviroServ Waste

Management in the Eastern Cape," Fiona said.

Two clean-ups were held in Cape Town. The first saw 13 staff join with environmental conservation organisation Sunshine Cleaning and collecting 390 bags of waste in Blue Downs.  The second saw members of Cape Town’s Durbanville community cleaning the local Kuilsrivier. EnviroServ donated a skip for the removal of the rubble which was preventing the river from flowing freely, causing a health and safety risk to people in the community.  Sonja Schwartz, EnviroServ’s New Business Sales Manager said objects removed from the river included two single mattresses, carpets, clothing, shoes, tree stumps, plastic and bottles and other rubbish.

Our Gauteng team also got involved, joining forces with The Beach Co-Op to clean the Johannesburg Spruit at Parkmore's Field and Study Centre. Ten volunteers collected 30 bags of rubbish. EnviroServ's Anel Pienaar said many plastic bags which had embedded themselves into river banks were removed. "This is definitely a worthy cause and keeping our environment clean should be a concern for all of us," she said. Well done to all involved for raising the waste game.

The Aloes community living alongside the EnviroServ depot in the Eastern Cape is small but has great potential. Youngsters from the area are passionate and believe that they have it in them to transform the lives of people within their community. Their enthusiasm is infectious and when community leader Eileen Leander requested equipment to assist with a clean-up, EnviroServ was happy to help. On Thursday, 17 September 2020, EnviroServ played our part as a good neighbour and assisted with an area clean-up.
