At EnviroServ, we take pride in marking World Wetlands Day in a way that reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability and the circular economy. Rather than relying on large posters and flashy campaigns, we believe in taking meaningful action that brings stakeholders together to clean and protect our precious water ecosystems — from oceans to rivers, wetlands, and stormwater systems.
This year, the world celebrated World Wetlands Day on Sunday, 2 February 2025, under the theme Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future. In line with this theme, EnviroServ partnered with various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to raise awareness about the importance of water cleanliness and conservation.
On Monday, 3 February, despite the challenging weather, our teams across the country took to the ground to collect tons of waste that could have otherwise become major sources of pollution and contamination. We are proud of these efforts, but we also recognise the broader importance of wetlands — not only for the health of our environment but also for their cultural and community value. By fostering a collective commitment to protecting these vital ecosystems, we are helping to ensure a more sustainable future for both nature and humanity.
Our Impact Across South Africa:
In the Eastern Cape, EnviroServ partnered with the Zwartkops Conservancy to clean up the wetlands surrounding the Swartkops Estuary near Redhouse. This collective effort removed litter and debris from the Swartkops River, contributing to the health of the local ecosystem.
In Gauteng, we focused our efforts at two schools—Quantum Secondary School in Etwatwa and Winnie Mandela Secondary School in Thembisa—partnering with local stakeholders to engage learners and the community in cleaning their surroundings. The clean-up at Quantum Secondary School was a highlight, where we joined forces with Etwatwa Waste Services and the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Local environmental ambassadors, Miss Eco Teen International 2024 Enhle Mdakane and Miss Pre-Teen Excellency 2024 Esihle Mangwana, also participated, embodying the enthusiasm and commitment of the young generation towards environmental sustainability.
At Winnie Mandela Secondary School, in collaboration with the City of Ekurhuleni and other key stakeholders, the day was an opportunity not only to clean up around he school, but to educate the community on the importance of wetlands and the power of collaboration in protecting our ecosystems.
A Message from Dawie Krugel, EnviroServ:
Dawie Krugel, a representative from EnviroServ, emphasised our dedication to sustainability. "At EnviroServ, we consider caring for the environment a core business imperative. We understand that the sustainability of our planet depends on collective action, and we are proud to lead by example," he stated.
Through our actions on World Wetlands Day, EnviroServ is demonstrating our ongoing commitment to preserving the environment and contributing to the circular economy. Together, we can create lasting change. EnviroServ, part of the global SUEZ company, has expanded its service offering to include water and wastewater management. It is therefore crucial that the organization and its employees walk the talk. Several tons of illegal waste were cleaned up on 3 February 2025 alone.
