Updates on Chemicals & Waste Management: Key Developments from the DFFE

2024 / 11 / 25

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) is making significant strides in chemicals and waste management with two crucial initiatives that industry stakeholders should be aware of.

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Study

Did you know that the DFFE has launched a study to assess the manufacture, import, export, and use of certain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)? These chemicals, including perfluorohexane sulphonic acid, dechlorane, and UV-328, are harmful to both human health and the environment. The study aims to gather valuable data on their presence and usage across industries. As part of this initiative, industry stakeholders are invited to provide input. This feedback will help inform the development of an inventory and action plan that seeks to eliminate these dangerous chemicals over time.

This is an important opportunity for businesses to contribute to a sustainable future by ensuring that their practices align with efforts to eliminate hazardous substances.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Guidelines Finalised

In another important update, the DFFE has finalised new guidelines and a toolkit for determining Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees. Following a series of public consultations, these guidelines provide a consistent, transparent, and fair approach to calculating fees for producers and organisations. EPR is a key strategy for ensuring that producers take responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their products, including their end-of-life disposal and recycling.

These developments are part of South Africa’s broader efforts to improve sustainability and reduce the environmental impact of chemicals and waste. As companies and individuals committed to sustainability, we encourage you to stay informed and engage with these initiatives.

By staying up-to-date with these changes, we can all contribute to a cleaner, greener future. For further information or assistance in understanding these new regulations, feel free to reach out to us—we’re here to help.
