As global awareness rises around the importance of diverting organic waste from landfills to avoid the production of greenhouse gasses, companies focused on driving sustainable business practices need to ensure they have proper plans in place for this waste stream.

By becoming part of the circular economy, companies reuse, recycle and responsibly manufacture, supporting the development of new industries and jobs, reducing emissions, and increasing the efficient use of natural resources such as energy, water and materials, said EnviroServ Waste Management National Zero Waste Manager, Alta van Zyl.

“In our drive to help customers join the circular economy, EnviroServ is constantly seeking alternative solutions to landfill for waste. Over the past year, we helped divert over 100 000 tons of waste from landfills.”

EnviroServ’s onsite waste management teams can help with the pre-processing of food waste including maize products, chocolate, sweets, and dough on a customer’s site, and blending with other waste streams off-site. The process also includes compostable serviettes, cutlery, paper, and ardboard; meaning it extends across a broader variety of waste streams.

International Compost Awareness Week was marked in May, to raise awareness of the many environmental benefits of turning organic waste into this “black gold”, which reduces waste while improving soil quality and combats climate change by preventing methane emissions through anaerobic decomposition. “We provide various composting services for clients, starting with a site assessment to understand what volumes are generated and what solution is most cost-effective – either an off-site composter or doing it in-situ,” Van Zyl said.

“EnviroServ tailors solutions for those in the hospitality industry, office canteens, grocery stores, and food manufacturers.”

EnviroServ’s mission is to help customers rethink their processes and take sustainable action; which results in significant environmental and business benefits. “Every individual can take small steps to curb their emissions, from shopping smarter or doing home composting to keep food scraps from landfills.”
