With a commitment to uphold and improve health and safety within the workplace, EnviroServ will launch the ‘Speak Up and Stop’ campaign during Safety Week, April 22 to 26.
Greg Alborough, EnviroServ’s Group Risk Manager, said the campaign was in response to observations that there were times when a situation had become dangerous, yet no one spoke up or stopped the task.
The campaign’s objective is to underpin that, at EnviroServ, everyone has the authority to speak up and stop an unsafe situation that could cause severe or even fatal accidents.
The programme will see management teams and their supervisors taken through a working session on how to manage major risks with good technical, organisation and human means.
“We need to empower all staff to create a culture of ‘Speak Up and Stop, with a slogan of “Keep a look out “and ‘See Something, Say Something’,” he said.
Alborough said barriers which prevented staff from speaking up had been identified, such as culture, complacency and seniority. “We need to understand these barriers, address them, and train people to become accountable. The aim is to create a climate of trust.”
Individual behaviours result from a decision taken, which are influenced by teams and team leaders’ behaviours.
“Managers will be taught how to react when violations take place and how to mitigate these risks. We are asking all employees to take a step back, think about the task at hand, reflect on potential unsafe acts and conditions, adjust their methodology if required, and then do the work.”
The ‘Speak Up and Stop’ campaign will be rolled out throughout the year within the EnviroServ Group.
