Managing landfills to maintain a clean environment

EnviroServ Waste Management operates 13 hazardous and non-hazardous waste treatment and disposal facilities in South Africa and Africa.

Landfill management refers to the processes involved in the planning, design, operation, closure and post closure of landfill sites otherwise known as waste treatment and disposal facilities. It further includes the monitoring of incoming waste streams, placement and compaction of waste, environmental monitoring and continuous control measures.

In South Africa we operate or manage the following landfills:

• Harmony Gold Mine Landfill in Carltonville

• Shongweni in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Class A
• Vissershok in Western Cape, Class A

In Africa, we operate or manage the following landfills:

• Mozambique – Mavoco landfill HH
• Mozambique – Vale Moatize landfill
• Mozambique – Nacala Vale landfill CDN
• Uganda – Nyamasoga landfill, Class A

Our sites are constructed in line with prevailing legislation, with all hazardous facilities designed by leading civil engineers, can handle various types of liquid and solid waste and are managed according to accepted legislative standards, relevant to the country they are based in. All new cells at EnviroServ’s hazardous waste treatment and disposal facilities comply with the double composite liner philosophy, a combination of a High Density Polyethylene membrane liner and natural compacted clay layers.

EnviroServ is integral in the planning, designing and building of waste treatment and disposal facilities to handle various waste streams. We identify and monitor waste streams and control measures to ensure appropriate processing of hazardous waste.

Our sites are continuously monitored by external specialists and tests include groundwater monitoring, surface water monitoring, sub-surface gas monitoring and ambient air quality monitoring, along with regular audits both internal and external, in line with our Waste Management Licence.

EnviroServ is responsible for closure and rehabilitation of landfills, as well as the monitoring of a landfill site, ensuring environmental compliance into the future.

EnviroServ is focused on protecting the environment and helping our customers dispose of their waste in line with legislation, offering cost effective and safe waste disposal. Worldwide, there are calls for waste management service providers’ strategies to include plans for alternatives to waste disposal at a landfill. EnviroServ supports these calls and offers alternatives to landfill where possible.
