SAFETY DATA SHEET (SDS)
What is a Safety Data Sheet?
A Safety Data Sheet is a document which contains information on
the potential health effects of exposure to chemicals, or other poten-
tially dangerous substances. It contains and describes safe working
procedures when handling these substances. A Safety Data Sheet
shall be produced for all substances and mixtures which meet the
harmonised criteria for physical, health or environmental hazards
as well as for all mixtures which contain substances that meet the
criteria for carcinogenic, toxic to reproduction or target organ tox-
icity in concentrations exceeding the cut-off values/concentration
limits. Mixtures not meeting the criteria for classification but con-
taining hazardous substances in certain concentrations can also be
required to have a Safety Data Sheet.
Why is a Safety Data Sheet required?
A Safety Data Sheet is intended to indicate the hazardous nature
of the product, how to use the product safely, what to expect if the
recommendations are not followed, what to do if accidents occur,
how to recognise symptoms of overexposure, and what to do if such
incidents occur.
Whose responsibility is it to submit the Safety
Data Sheet to EnviroServ?
Every supplier, manufacturer, importer or distributor of a hazardous
substance or mixture intended for use at a workplace shall provide
the party receiving such a substance or mixture with a Safety Data
Sheet, free of charge. The Safety Data Sheet shall contain informa-
tion as set out in the diagram below and as stipulated in the National
Environmental Management Waste Act.
It is the responsibility of the generator to get the Safety Data Sheet
from their supplier and to submit it to EnviroServ.
When must the generator be in possession of
a Safety Data Sheet?
If a waste is found to be hazardous, a SDS is required for storage,
transport and disposal of the hazardous waste.
During the quoting process, an EnviroServ Sales Consultant will
request the customer to submit their waste sample along with the
Safety Data Sheet linked to that waste.
SDS INFORMATION
An SDS should contain the following
information:
1. Identification
2. Hazard(s) identification
3. Composition/information on
ingredients
4. First-aid measures
5. Fire-fighting measures
6. Accidental release measures
7. Handling and storage
8. Exposure controls/personal
protection
9. Physical and chemical properties
10. Stability and reactivity
11. Toxicological information
12. Ecological information
13. Disposal considerations
14. Transport information
15. Regulatory information
16. Other information
SDS CONTENT
An SDS should provide a clear description
of the data used to identify the hazards.
The minimum information for each sec-
tion listed below should be included.
If specific information is not applicable or
not available under a particular subhead-
ing, the SDS should clearly state this.
Some subheadings are national or re-
gional in nature and Safety Data Sheets
should contain the information relevant
for the area that the SDSs are intended
for.
