strategy to divert waste from landfill. The government’s strategy includes waste

minimisation, and recovery of resources.

EnviroServ ensures that lighting waste is recycled. The venture aims to ensure

that customers move up the waste hierarchy through innovative recycling solu-

tions. To ensure that lighting waste is not disposed of at a landfill, EnviroServ

provides its customers with lamp boxes and/or bins which are emptied regu-

larly. When the box and/or bin is full, a client simply calls EnviroServ, EnviroServ

then collects the box from the premises and if so required, delivers another

one. Fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent lamps and other energy efficient

lighting such as linear fluorescent and high intensity discharge lamps contain

mercury, and thus need to be handled and recycled according to legislative re-

quirement. It is estimated that a single fluorescent tube has enough mercury to

contaminate as much as 30,000 litres of water, and water is a scarce resource.
