MUNICIPAL WASTE SERVICES

Vision Mission and Promise
Vision Mission and Promise

INTRODUCTION

There are growing calls for governments to ensure waste generated in their countries is managed responsibly and in a manner that would not impact negatively on humans or the environment. Responsible service providers such as EnviroServ have stepped in with the necessary expertise and resources to assist.

The Luanda Domestic waste collection started in August 2003 with eight vehicles and a staff compliment of 46.  They ran a day shift only and did 226 loads in their first month of operation.  To this they added a street sweeping service in Luanda.

THE CHALLENGE

EnviroServ had to start operations from scratch.  The company was running two small offices with no IT, financial or maintenance systems in place and the language barrier posed a problem.  They had no ablution facilities no workshop – they ran their workshop under a tree.  The company had no skilled or trained staff across all disciplines.

THE SOLUTION

In 2003, EnviroServ started a domestic waste collection service in Luanda, Angola, drawing expertise and resources from its South African operations. The teams employed and skilled, local community members offering:

• Staff training
• Facilitation of policies and procedures
• Route set up
• Set up of workshops
• New fleet
• New EnviroServ offices built in 2008
• Door to door collections
• Clean ups / street cleaning
• Empowerment contracts
• Entrepreneur development contacts
• On site waste management and management of landfill sites.

IN CONCLUSION

As time progressed, the company was able to increase its staff compliment to 1 200 employees and added new fleet which included mechanical sweeping vehicles, ROROs, RELs, Toyota LDVs and Renault Kerax.  EnviroServ has since assisted many municipalities with domestic waste services and provided employment to thousands.
